The Job Opportunity and Duties…
Requires considerable knowledge of penal workshop operating policies and procedures and skill in operation of tools and equipment of particular assigned area in order to; under the direction of the Penal Industry Manager and or Penal Workshop Superintendent oversees work of inmates assigned to the Ohio Penal Industries (OPI) Construction/asbestos crew: (e.g. labors, equipment operators, construction trades and asbestos abetment, etc.)
Ability to operate heavy equipment, not limited to; track hoes, bull dozers, skid steers, bobcats, steel welding etc; provides security and custody of inmates (e.g., conducts daily inmate counts; maintains security, discipline and order of assigned area
Enforces institution rules and regulations)
Maintains control of supplies, equipment and tools (e.g., issues and records daily tool and inventory supplies)
Trains inmates in proper work methods, equipment operation, and/or safety practices (e.g., proper and safe handling of tools, machinery and equipment and chemicals such as hammers, screwdrivers, saws, power drills, chemicals etc.)
Assigns and reviews work performed and completes quality control checks
Evaluates work of and assigns specific job functions to inmates and prepares and maintains records and reports of onsite work activities and service
Issues materials and tools
Oversees equipment maintenance (e.g., schedules routine and preventative maintenance) and/or workshop cleaning
Escorts and/or transports inmates
Oversees shipping, receiving, storage and/or inventory of products and materials
Completes reports (e.g., prepares and submits); completes daily and month-end inmate payroll, month-end Earned Credit report as assigned
Completes inmate performance evaluations (e.g., annual and special) as assigned. Completes weekly inspection report as assigned
Performs other related duties and security functions as assigned
Attends in-service trainings
Works on special projects and committees as assigned
Attends meetings, trainings and conferences
May give presentations and conduct training
Responds both verbally and in writing to questions and concerns; works on special projects and/or committees as assigned
Formal education in arithmetic that includes fractions, decimals & percentages; 18 mos. trg. or 18 mos. exp. in craft or trade (e.g., sewing, metal work, carpentry) & in operation of hand & power tools & equipment (e.g., drill press, bindery equipment, sewing machine) of particular assigned area; 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in employee training & development.
Or, for positions assigned to asbestos abatement program, successful completion of the following courses: asbestos building inspection initial course, asbestos management planner initial course & asbestos abatement project supervisor initial course per EPA regulations Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (i.e., AHERA), CRF763 Sub Part E.
Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
Knowledge of penal workshop operating policies & procedures*; craft or trade in particular assigned area (e.g., sewing, metal work, carpentry); fractions, decimals, percentages; employee training & development. Skill in operation of hand & power tools & equipment (e.g., drill press, bindery equipment, sewing machine) of particular assigned area. Ability to understand system of mechanical or other specialized procedures; communicate verbally regarding mechanical or non-mechanical matters; stand, walk or bend continuously; move limbs/fingers easily to operate equipment or use tools. (*)Developed after employment.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is a tobacco-free workplace.
Pre-Employment Drug Testing: The final applicant selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to an appointment to test for illegal drug use. The State will decline to extend a final offer of employment to any applicant with a verified positive test result. Also, an applicant with a positive test result will not be considered for any position with the State of Ohio for a period of one year. “Not applicable to current state employees”.
